Grey was drinking a cup of strong tea and feeling relaxed about the evening as he studied the security cameras’ feeds.

The band was a huge hit, the club was heaving, and they were making a lot of money. And even better, there were very few issues for security to deal with, and no sign of the demon.

“Looking good so far,” he said, turning to Domino.

She was at the window observing the dance floor, but she looked at him and smiled. “This band is great. I wish I was down there.”

“Why don’t you go? I’ll be fine for ten minutes.”

She shook her head. “No. I’d rather not get distracted. Besides, there’s a small group by the bar I’m keeping my eye on.”

He crossed to her side. It wasn’t hard to spot them. They’d carved out an area for themselves to the left of the bar. A tight knot of half a dozen men. “I see them. They’re just drunk and having fun.”

“And pestering the bar staff.”

“Rory is close by. He’ll sort them out,” he said, spotting his dark hair and familiar build. He had absolute faith in Rory. He was old and wise enough not to overreact to a bunch of drunk idiots, but neither would he tolerate them if they got out of hand.

“I think I’m just tired and overwrought. It’s been a busy twenty-four hours.” Domino shifted her stance and ran a hand through her mane of hair. “I need coffee.”

“Any news from Maverick?” he asked as she headed to the coffee machine.

“No. I’m sure he’s just busy tracking down his brother. Let’s hope Birdie’s niece is helpful.”

“And his brother isn’t a dick.”

“He has to find him first.” The door swung open, and Arlo came in, a disgruntled look on his face. He had been back for a few hours, mooching around the place, and generally looking miserable after being told the witches didn’t need him. “You’re a ray of sunshine,” Grey told him. “No fun upstairs?”

“No. It’s all quiet.”

“Which is good news, you fruit loop!”

“Is it? The witches are demon hunting, and I’m stuck here.”

Grey didn’t dare tease him about Odette. Too soon. “Well, we need you, so suck it up! Plus, you get to watch a killer band.”

“Whatever.” He huffed and headed to the monitors. “They should have let me help. Everything is okay here.”

Grey was just about to offer some contrived rubbish in an effort to appease him when his phone rang, as did Domino’s and Arlo’s. With an uneasy glance at the others, Grey listened to Morgana’s hurried, short message. He knew it must be the other witches calling his colleagues.

The demon was on the way, and so were they.

Neither shifter was tired nor bored now. Both were on high alert as they ended their calls, killer instincts on full display. Grey had worked with shifters long enough to recognise the signs. Their shoulders were thrown back, they seemed to have increased in stature, and already a golden light kindled deep within their eyes. Grey’s own adrenalin levels spiked, and his thought processes sharpened, too.
